A few weeks back we finally finished our front lawn and garden. It's so great to see green grass instead of the endless red dirt when we look out the windows. Mum and Dad came to help and we got the job done.
I have been doing so much lately that I have so little free time to sit down and blog about any of it. I have so many ideas and projects and only one hour of rest time to do much towards any of them. Today I am missing the buttons and stuffing I need to complete my latest projects so I feel uninspired to do anything else until I can finish them off.

Something I had wanted to do for at least twelve months was to sort out my Indian spices. They come in plastic packets from the Indian store and I was just snipping off the corners and using them straight out of the packet with a clothes peg to seal the hole. (Which works okay until there are more than a dozen packets laying around in the pantry making mess and taking up space and I never have enough pegs to hang out the laundry.)

So a couple weeks back I finally found enough glass jars to sort out my spice stash. 17 different spices, essential for the Indian kitchen: turmeric, coriander seeds, ground coriander, cumin seeds, ground cumin, cinnamon sticks, garam masala, ground fenugreek, kashmiri chilli powder, fennel seeds, black pepper, mustard seeds, cloves, cardamom pods, poppy seeds, star anise and hot chilli powder.

My little helper helped me pour the spices into their new containers and stick on the labels. Now I will be able to find my spices with searching through a huge pile of packets, the pegs are back in laundry where they belong, and the neat rows of jars sitting on my pantry shelf fill my tidy heart with such pride. A job well done.
Life around here has been easing back towards normality since moving into our new house. The first months have been crammed with landscaping and gardening and painting furniture. Things are returning to a slightly slower pace as winter approaches and we can no longer do a huge amount of work in the garden.
We had a chance to go out and take some family pictures on the weekend. It was a beautiful Autumn afternoon and we got some lovely pictures. I've been wanting some nice new ones to make a photo wall in our front room.
I was searching for something to do with Jeremy one quiet day before the Christmas holidays rolled around and came up with the idea of a printing craft. He loves to paint or get paint-y and so I thought that printing might be right up his alley.
I cut some Christmas shapes into a couple potatoes, pulled out the red, green and gold paint and we had a lovely time. Free fun for all... just a shame I had to spend the afternoon scrubbing excess paint off the deck. (Maybe I should invest in a big plastic mat for messy activities.)
We used the paper as wrapping for Christmas presents.
Christmas has come and gone for another year and our house is steadily making its way towards completion. The builders are off on holidays for another week... so in order to keep things happening I thought I would post some pictures of where we are up to now!
We have only the painting and the final electrical and plumbing work left to go inside the house. Then the site needs to be tidied... all the dirt spread back in place and we are done! They are predicting early February now as the finish date.
Back in September, our mulberry tree fruited profusely. I picked mulberries every second day for about three weeks, living with permanently stained fingers and nails. We ate a lot of mulberries for the first few days but the sheer quantity of them became a little overwhelming. I started to freeze them and cook with them. Now, some two months on, I still have a freezer full of mulberries but I have come up with an amazing mulberry pie recipe that I will now share with you!

Homemade Mulberry and Apple Pie

Pie Filling
- 500 grams of fresh or frozen mulberries
- 2 apples peeled, cored and diced
- 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
- 2 tsp plain flour

Pie Base
- 1 cup plain flour
- 1/4 cup almond meal
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 60 grams butter
- 2 tsp coconut palm sugar
- water to mix

Cream Topping
- 1 1/2 cups whipping cream
- 1 1/2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 180 degrees C and grease a standard size pie dish. Combine dry base ingredients and rub in the butter. Add enough water to form a soft dough. Roll out to 5mm thick and place in the pie dish. Trim the edges. Place the pie dish in the freezer for 15-20 mins to chill the dough. Transfer the pie to the oven and bake for 15-20 mins or until the pastry is lightly browned. Set aside.

Meanwhile, combine the mulberries and apple in a large saucepan and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Do not add water as mulberries give out a lot of juice while cooking. Once the fruit comes to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer until the apple in tender. Drain almost all of the liquid from the saucepan and then place it back on the stove. Add the maple syrup and the plain flour, mixing until the flour is absorbed and the pie filling has thickened.

Pour the hot filling into the hot pie base and return to the oven for another 15-20 mins. Remove and cool completely.

Combine the cream, maple syrup and vanilla extract in a medium bowl. Whip until firm peaks form. Spread the cream over the cooled pie and serve! Delicious!
I can barely find the time to think these days, let alone write on my blog. With my personal down-time reduced to about 1 hour each day and an incredibly clingy little boy, I have to prioritise every free minute. Most of them go to things like sewing, reading, planning stuff for our house, trying to read my Bible or just laying there for a minute.
I really have so many things that I want to write about... holidays start tomorrow for us... so maybe I'll have more time then.

Anyway, the house is going up with all speed. The exterior is basically complete and the interior is coming along nicely. The last of the carpentry work will be finished this week and then our kitchen will arrive! Very excited!
I have been working all nap times for the past few weeks on a new quilting project. Jeremy is old enough to move out of the cot and into a single bed. To ease the transition and talk it up as an amazing stage of life, I decided to make a fun quilt for him to get excited about on his big bed.

I chose some lovely fabrics in greens, teals and white with a fun zoo animal print in two different colours. The 12 inch quilt blocks are very simple and look great divided out into their colours to make a blue trim around the green centre. I made the quilt as a cover for a single quilt insert for cold Toowoomba nights and it fastens at the bottom end with a row of press studs.

The pillow case was just made out of the leftover pieces of fabric. Jeremy loves his quilt and can't wait to have his big bed in his room. Just waiting for the holidays!
There is a reason that my blogging has slowed down a lot lately. I have a lot on my mind... we bought some land and are about to start building a house!
Most of our weekends and spare afternoons for the last couple months have been taken up with visits to builders, banks, cabinet makers, tile shops and other such places. We are finally reaching the end of planning and the beginning of building. Our plans are sitting in council at this moment quietly awaiting the stamp of approval. After that... the real fun begins!

We have approximately 3000sqm of land on which I intend to grow lots of lovely fruit trees and vegetables. I couldn't wait to have something happening on our piece of land so I bought some bare root fruit trees and we planted them on our block. Very exciting times. I used a new pruning technique that I have been reading about to keep fruit trees a manageable size and after sitting in the ground as little sticks for just over a week, they are starting to shoot. Fresh nectarines and peaches in a few years for us! (If I can protect them from the builder's trucks during the construction of our house!)
So Daryl's birthday rolled around again this week and I decided to try something a little less unhealthy this year after the peanut butter and chocolate-ness of last year's cake. I went with a carrot cake recipe that I found on the internet. It sounded great. Ginger carrot cake with salted Butterscotch frosting. You can find the recipe HERE.
It was simple to make and very tasty. Though, not quite as exciting for my 2 year old. I think this one is a bit of a grown-up cake. (He likes the icing). Overall a great recipe. My only criticism is that it was a little dry and crumbly. Here is the finished product. Yum.

On another note, I have been busy learning how to cook Indian cuisine properly. I figured it was about time to give it a good go. So I borrowed a book called 'From India: food, family & tradition' by Kumar and Suba Mahadevan. It has the authenticity tick of approval by my Indian Mother-in-law and has so far produced some truly delicious meals. The man in the Indian spice store recognises me now and I feel like I just may have secured future success in my Indian food endeavours!

This winter coat is my latest project... one of my latest projects... others include new jeans for Jeremy and revamping op-shop jeans for myself. As the weather slowly cools down up here in Toowoomba we are needing the warm things.

The pattern that I used can be found online at Small Dream Factory. It's basic in design and easy to sew but really rather effective with the quilting lines. I used a layer of cotton drill as the outside, a layer of fluffy jumper fabric as my inner wadding and a layer of cotton jersey for the lining. The finished product is warm and stylish for every day wear. Very pleased with the result!
So we now live in Toowoomba, a place that apparently can have winter days that don't rise above 10 degrees Celsius. Coming from sunny, warm Brisbane, the thought is somewhat alarming and our winter wardrobes are far from ready. I have been trying to source coat and jacket patterns for Jeremy and I came across this one in a library book.
Sadly, since it has been at least a month since I finished the coat, the book has been returned and I can't remember who it was that designed the pattern to give them credit. Suffice it to say, it was not I.
Oh, apparently you can look up your previous library records. Here we go: 'Sew adorable : classic clothes for boys and girls' by Vanessa Mooncie.
Anyway... what a fabulous pattern! This wonderfully English-looking little coat has a round collar, little tailored pockets and the cutest buttons down the front. It is fully lined with both a layer of fleecy warmth and a synthetic fabric. The original pattern was knee length but I shortened it for easier wearing on little boys. The wool fabric was a little scratchy so I sewed in a little lining around the part of the collar that touches the neck.
I am so very pleased with the result, now I just have to wait for the cold weather to roll in so Jeremy can wear it. He is adorable in the coat, kids just don't get any cuter than this!
This post is simply a way for my to share some of my excitement about a new venture that my husband and I are starting up. My husband, Daryl, has been into wedding photography for a while now and has finally got a website up and going. I am his assistant... holding flashes, adjusting skirts and generally helping out. We make a good team (I think) and I believe his photos speak for themselves. I'm very proud of my husband for working so hard at his photography and becoming so good at it!

If you are looking for a wedding photographer in the south east corner of Queensland (or are just curious), here is a website for you to take a peak at! (Click on the link below).
My son has slept in a sleeping bag since he was about 4 months old. We have bags for cold winter, bags for hot summer and a few in between but he seems to never stop growing and we needed a new in between one for the cool summer nights in Toowoomba. Instead of heading down to David Jones for a $70 sleeping bag, I decided to make my own.

Using another sleeping bag that fit him, I simply traced out the pattern and copied it as well as I could... which I think is really a rather good copy and I could go into sleeping bag business. Or not. I used a printed flannelette for the outer layer and a cotton lining to keep him just a bit warmer. The finished product fits great and is doing a good job.
Seeing as I bought too much for the flannelette fabric, I also decided to make him some new winter
pyjama's. I happened to have the perfect boy's pyjama pattern in the correct size in my lifeline book fest stash of old patterns. A very cute set of flannelette pyjamas for my boy. He was almost as excited as me!
So Jeremy needed a new hat. I found a pattern online and made it up this morning. Simple as that. Thanks to the free hat pattern at oliver + s which you can find by clicking HERE.

It came together in about an hour and is reversible. It looks great and fits well. What more could I want? Jeremy cooperated very well for some pictures.
I like to find inspiration in baby clothes that I see on other people's children. This unusual outfit is based off a little skirted onsie that I saw on a friend's baby. It was of course made up in a stretch fabric and therefore was able to be very close fitting. I like the idea of an all-in-one romper and dress for a few reasons. Firstly, babies crawl and dresses cause problems with crawling. The aim of this outfit was to have the skirt short enough to stay out of the way when crawling. The other reason I like it is that the design is so unique and provides so many opportunities for adjustment in the pattern.
Make it as an all-in-one outfit, make it as a romper or make it as a little dress.

The pattern is sized to fit babies aged 6-12 months. To complete it, you will need some sewing experience.

You can find this pattern online at my Etsy shop, RP Original.
So I haven't done too much crochet lately as it has been warm. It feels horrible to work with warm wools and sweaty hands... or even just to have the wool sitting on your lap. But over Christmas, I had the opportunity to help my husband photograph my newborn niece and I thought that a crocheted headband would do the job nicely.

I used a grey 8 ply wool for the band a a soft white 4 ply for the flower. The band is simply two rows of double crochet worked in a strip with a picot stitch around the outside. The band was then joined together and the join hidden under the flower. The flower is made up of two simple 5 petal flowers stacked on top of each other and sewn onto the band. I love it that I have become comfortable enough with my crochet to make up my own patterns!

I'm currently working on a vest for Jeremy to wear in the winter, so keep an eye out for progress on that! In the meantime, enjoy the pictures of this gorgeous baby doing a fabulous job of modelling the headband! My sweet boy turned 2 a few days ago and you cannot have a birthday without a cake. So I turned to a beloved birthday companion of my childhood, the Women's Weekly Birthday Cake book. In this marvellous book Jeremy and I found a train cake that appealed to him and I got to work.

To make this cake, I started with a double butter cake mix and baked it in a rectangular slice pan. This made a large cake of a good height to work with.

I then cut this rectangular cake into three strips about 8 cm wide. I had a fourth strip left over that wasn't quite wide enough.

As you can see below, I have cut each 8cm wide strip in half to create the train and carriages. I then cut one of the halves in half again to make two think pieces of cake to give some height to the carriages. The jam roll sits on the front of the train as a rounded nose.

I iced each section of the train with a different coloured butter cream icing. The original train has four carriages, but two were enough for me!

I then cut liquorice traps into thin strips to outline the train and carriages and used choc mint biscuits for the wheels. The liquorice also forms the train tracks.

Then I just decorated with smarties and liquorice all-sorts to create the windows and lights on the train. I used a large marshmallow with a pipe cleaned stuck in it to show the smoke coming out of the smoke stack. The carriages are filled with marshmallows at Jeremy's request.

Finally, I stuck the sleeper sections of the train track onto the cake board with icing and stuck some smarties onto the wheels. Hooray! An amazing cake for a little boy.

Hello dear readers and welcome to 2016. A new year has begun and I am keen to get back into regular blogging about my projects. The holidays are a busy time for us as I am not as free to sit down and blog away after lunch as I am while school term is on.

My holidays projects have been many and varied and I look forward to sharing them with you soon. Meanwhile, we have moved to a new city (Toowoomba) and are in the process of putting down some roots and finding our way around before Daryl gets back to work. The Christmas period has been busy with delightful family gatherings and birthdays... truly my favourite time of the year.

I have sewn for my first niece, starting planting a vegetable garden and involved myself in my husband's wedding photography. I even managed to sew a new dress for myself. Life is good and God has brought us safely to a new year. I'm looking forward to seeing what unfolds in this next chapter of life in Toowoomba!

Ruthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05627710703452855500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8098628577686110320.post-79387402286279330582015-11-27T13:27:00.001+10:002015-11-27T13:27:33.236+10:00Christmas Dress

We are moving to another city in just over a week. I have been feverishly sewing and drawing patterns for the last couple weeks, trying to get all my current projects done. One of these patterns was for a very cute drop waisted dress. I first designed this dress as a birthday present for a friend's daughter.
I made it up as a size 12-18 months in a very cute pale blue fabric with white spots. It looked fabulous.

So I drew a size 2 as well. And got carried away with Christmas ideas. This is the amazing result. (I love it!)
How Christmas-y and cute is that? This dress design would have to be one of my absolute favourites now. Easy to sew and so cute on a little girl.

The Christmas dress comes in two sizes, 12-18 months and size 2. You can find this pattern on my Etsy shop by following the link below!
I wasn't just talking when I said that overalls are one of my favourite clothing items for little boys. I feel like I need to make the most of them in the next few months because they won't be much good for my son once we start toilet training! I made up the McCalls 6304 pattern overalls the other day.

I made the size 2 up but forgot to measure the shoulder to crotch length. So I ended up with overalls that were rather fat but too short. With some tricky manoeuvring I managed to squeeze an extra inch out of them to make them fit.

This is a great pattern but will probably need some work in the fitting stage. I took the width in by some 4 or more cm and it is still on the large and loose side. But isn't my boy cute?

Keep an eye out for my new overalls pattern for babies aged 3-6 months in the next weeks.
I keep finding more fun little crochet projects to keep me busy in the evenings. Here are two of my latest... this crochet obsession shows no signs of abating!

A sweet little beanie for a brand new baby. In the future I hope to have some opportunities to photograph new babies, so this one is a prop for that dream! Too impractical for everyday use but so very cute!

A little bag for my crochet hooks. I keep losing them amongst my bags of wool, so this is a fun way of keeping them safe. It also gave me a chance to practice my flowers.
